Is Hal a Man or a Mouse When It Comes to Romance?
At the beginning of the movie, Hal is a mouse when it comes to romance. He is superficial and only cares about the physical appearance of women. He does not care what type of personality the woman has, he just wants to be with someone who is physically attractive. When he first started dating Rosemary he was only interested in her because he thought she was attractive. Then when he found out what she really looked like, he did not even have the courage to talk to her. But when he finally grew up and realized that what is on the inside is what really matters, and accepted Rosemary for who she was, he became a man. He loved Rosemary for who she was, not what she looked like. He learns that physical appearance is not everything and this is the moment that Hal goes from being a mouse to a man.
When Hal and Rosemary first meet she has very low self-confidence. She does not think she is pretty at all and has trouble accepting complements. Hal compliments her constantly and at first she disregards the comments but then she gets upset with him for complementing her. Her self-confidence is so low that she does not believe that a guy can find her attractive and thinks it is a joke if they try to compliment her. But as her relationship with Hal becomes more serious, she begins to gain confidence in herself, and she begins accepting herself for whom she is. If Rosemary was a good friend of mine, I would constantly remind her of what a great person she is. To me it seems that all she needed was some reassurance to feel confortable in her own skin. I would remind her that appearances are not everything. She was very sweet, caring, and had amazing qualities as a person. I would remind her that it is what is on the inside that counts, and that she has a great personality and would one day find someone who realized that.
