Kramer vs. Kramer Post 1-- Caitlin Boer

What do you think of the job Ted did taking care of Billy by himself?

I think that Ted being alone without anyone to help him adjust made the job of parenting Billy hard. He had to change his entire lifestyle in a split second, because there was no one else to take care of Billy and Joanna was gone. Considering the hardship of being Billy's only parent and the difficulty of making the adjustment, I think Ted did a pretty good job raising him on his own. Ted had a hard time at first getting used to working at his job and taking on Joanna's responsibilities, once he got a pattern and a routine down he did really well. Even though the transition was hard for Ted and Billy, I think they got so much closer and developed a really strong bond. A bond, that in the end was too strong for Joanna to break without hurting Billy and Ted. Ted made some mistakes, but so do most parents, especially when they're adjusting to parenthood. No parent is by any means perfect, and considering this Ted was a really great father. He not only learned to take care of Billy's basic needs, but he learned how to negotiate with his son and create a relationship that had trust and love. I think Ted did a really good job pushing away his own emotional distress for the sake of Billy's well being. Ted also did a good job not letting his career stop him from being a good father and making Billy his number one priority. In the trial, Joanna's lawyer tries to make it seem like Ted isn't a fit father and indangers Billy, which wasn't fair because Ted had a lot to adjust to and hadn't had the seven years Joanna had to perfect his parenting style. As a "new" parent Ted did a really good job taking care of Billy's basic and emotional needs.
