Kramer vs. Kramer Post 2-- Caitlin Boer

Does Joanna Kramer deserve custody of her son, in your opinion?

In my opinion, I don't believe that Joanna Kramer deserves custody of her son Billy. It isn't fair to Billy or Ted Kramer to take Billy away from Ted. I can understand that Joanna was extremely unhappy and needed to get away to figure out her issues, but she didn't handle her departure very well. She left Ted suddenly, and kind of left Billy and his father to fend for themselves. Ted worked really hard to be a good parent and fill in Joanna's shoes, and I don't think it's fair to give Billy back to his mother as soon as she's gotten her head on straight. She left and both Billy and Ted suffered, so I think she needs to spend time working herself back into Billy's life, because she is his mother, but Billy and Ted formed a tight bond that shouldn't be ignored. I do believe that Joanna had a right to leave, but the way she left wasn't right and she didn't handle her problems well. I also believe that Joanna does deserve to eventually gain more custody of Billy, but just because she is his mother doesn't mean that she automatically get full custody, especially due to the problems leading up to the custody hearing. As Ted said one's gender shouldn't determine how well they can be a parent. Ted had no idea how to take care of Billy, but he learned how to. So when he was alone, Ted was not only taking care of his responsibilities, but also the ones that were Joanna's. I think the fact that he filled two roles and created a strong bond shows how much effort he put into raising Billy and I think he deserves the custody over Joanna. All in all, I do believe Joanna has some rights toward Billy because she's his mother, but she also made some mistakes and didn't handle some things properly. I don't think her mistakes should be rewarded with custody, because she needs to learn from them and she also needs to spend time proving that things have changed and she's ready to take on the role of Billy's caretaker again.
