I think for the situation he was quickly put in John was a good substitute for his wife. He changed almost instantly from a workaholic to a fulltime parent for his son when his wife left. I think he did deserve custody of his son because he did everything he could for him. He could have been a better father by being a little more sensitive to his son and being more patient, but apart from that I think he did everything he could to the best of his ability.
