Joanna Kramer does not deserve custody of her son. Yes, she is the mother, and she cared for him for the majority of his childhood as a full time mother. However, she left her son with the father, tired of her housewife life and in need of something new. If she takes back her son, there is no guarantee the same thing won’t happen again, and that she won’t have to leave her son again. However, if that happens, Mr. Kramer won’t be there to take care of Billy, and Billy will be forced to fend for himself, something that a child should not have to do.
Also, it doesn’t seem that Joanna taking care of Billy is the best thing for Joanna either. She needs space and freedom. She moves around, never staying too long in the same relationship or the same job. I believe that she will be happier if she has the freedom to change her life as she sees fit without the burden of a child to take care of.
Finally, Ted definitely does deserve custody. He has proven that he can keep a job and take good care of a child at the same time, an impressive feat. He cares for Billy and has a stable job. He enjoys spending time with his son and is willing to give up a lot to keep spending time with him. Although both parents want custody, Ted deserves custody more.
