Joanna was right in leaving her son and husband. She should have given them warning, but is she felt mentally incapable of staying, she had no choice but to leave. In order to take care of anyone else, one must first take care of oneself. Joanna realized that the environment she was currently submersed in was one that she couldn’t cope with, and that she needed a change. Since she found her husband inaccessible, she couldn’t warn him of her change of heart.
Joanna left so that she wouldn’t start fighting with Ted, or worse, so that she wouldn’t do anything drastic as a result of her depression. It might have been too fast a break from her family, but in a way that’s easier to cope with than leaving with warning, since then the tension in the household would have grown even more. This way, there was more shock than conflict.
