At the beginning of the film, Hal is very shallow. He is tainted by his dad’s dying wish that Hal look only for a woman who’s beautiful. By only looking at the outside, Hal misses the inner characteristics of the people around him, completely disregarding their varying kindness and intelligence, instead focusing on the prettiness of their faces.
At the end of the film, Hal goes through a transformation - he now looks at people for their inner beauty, rather than their outward appearance. He is no longer shallow, and he is far happier - it is far more enjoyable to spend your time with kind, funny people than beautiful but mean people. His transformation was most definitely for the better.
