Joanna is not justified for leaving Billy and Ted alone. Though she was struggling with her life and those in her life, she walked away from the most important relationships in her life and caused a lot of damage. She left with no sign of returning, abandoning her son with a man he barely knew. Ted had no idea how to take care of Billy and Joanna knew that. She was justified to leave her husband but not her son and not both of them together. She returns feeling guilty of her actions and right-fully so because she left those two with no idea of how to move forward. They were stranded at a cross-roads with Billy hating his father and Ted losing his job and considering shipping Billy off to relatives. Billy ultimately thought her leaving was his fault as did Ted and it did nothing but hurt those around her. There is no justification for walking out on your child and abandoning them, as a parent it is your responsibility to take care of your child and Joanna realized that later on and that is why she return but it was still not acceptable that she left one of if not the most important relationships in her life without an explanation or sign of ever returning.
