Rosemary begins the film with a self-image
that focuses on what she feels is an ugly appearance. It vastly lowers her self-esteem,
and makes it difficult for her to form relationships. Since she could not look
at herself with respect, it was difficult for others to look at her with
respect either. However, as the film progresses, her relationship with Hal
allows her to gain self-confidence. She now not only respects herself on the
inside as a decent human being, but also realizes that she is pretty in her own
right. If I were to give Rosemary advice, I would tell her that everyone sees
people differently, and that getting hung up on looks doesn’t do you any good.
If someone who was interested in her was interested in her for her appearance
alone, they would be shallow and therefore aught to be avoided.
