Molly Sevcik Shallow Hal Post 1

Question 3: Rosemary is a symbol for women all over America who have negative self-image issues. Whenever Hal compliments Rosemary, she says that she doesn't "think it's funny." This is very indicative of a response of a woman with low-self esteem. They believe that nothing is good about them, so any compliment must be a joke or a lie. I find this very upsetting, because every person has positive attributes and should believe in themselves. Throughout the film, Hal's love makes her realize that she is a wonderful person, inside and out. She just needed someone to reassure her that she is a great person. If Rosemary was my good friend, I would tell her that her weight doesn't define how she should view herself. She is an extremely generous and caring person, as shown through her work in the hospital and other community service organizations. If she had believed in herself, men would have taken notice and she could have found her "Hal" much earlier. Men like self-confidence, so if you aren't self-confident, it is much more difficult to find someone who will put up with your incessant complaints about your body. Even without a man, Rosemary should still believe in herself because a positive outlook in life will benefit a human being exponentially better than a negative outlook.
