and the man he became at the end of the film.

At the beginning of "Shallow Hal", Hal is, you guessed it, very shallow. He sees women, in fact most people, for what they look like on the surface. While the spell is on him, he essentially hasn't changed. He is still attracted to Rosemary because of her physical appearance, or what he sees as physical appearance. He doesn't see her real physical appearance, he still is attracted to her because he thinks that she is physically pretty. He doesn't actually undergo a real change until the end of the movie, when he realizes that he has been seeing people's "inner beauty", and then he realizes that he can appreciate them for what is inside them, and this is a great change for him to undergo. He has definitely become a better, more appreciative man.
