I think that overall, Ted did a great job raising Billy. Although he may have been self-centered in the beginning of the movie, he certainly learned to put his son's needs first instead of his own. To me, it seems like that is one of the most, if not the most, important qualities of a good parent. A good parent needs to be able to drop everything to make sure that his or her child is safe and taken care of. It is obviously extremely hard to balance a career, a marriage, and a child; at the beginning of the movie, it does not seem that Ted even makes an effort to balance the three, only focusing on his career. However, once his marriage fails, he realizes that he has to at least balance taking care of his child with the career that he is already so invested in. Once he comes to this realization, I think that he makes the necessary adjustments to effectively raise Billy. This is evident especially in the courtroom scene when Ted is explaining why he lost his job. It becomes clear that he ultimately did due to his loyalty to his son. He left and missed work multiple times because his son was hurt or sick. With these statements, Ted can be seen as a dedicated and caring father because he is truly prioritizing his son's health and needs. Beyond this, he also displays that he is a loving father through his spending quality time with Billy. They read books, go to the park, and take walks together. All of these aspects together can help justify that Ted learned to be a great father to Billy.
