When Hal first meets Rosemary, she has a terrible self-image. She does not have any confidence and does not think that she has any redeeming qualities. Hal compliments her constantly, but she brushes them off or even berates him and says that she doesn't think it's "funny" that he is doing so. She cannot even fathom that someone may be paying her a genuine compliment because she doesn't think that she possesses anything worthy of a compliment. However, as her relationship with Hal progresses, she begins to gain confidence and embrace who she is and how she looks, even though she still has many insecurities. She still moves in the right direction and realizes that Hal is right; she is a truly great person, inside and out. If Rosemary was my good friend, I would remind her of this often. It seems like she really needed reassurance from others to build up her self-esteem. I would also tell her not to be so caught up on her outward appearance. Inner beauty is what matters most, and Rosemary has so much of that. She is thoughtful, caring, and selfless, and she truly cares about others. Believing that she possesses these qualities could help Rosemary gain the confidence necessary for attracting people, whether these people be friends or boyfriends. Self-confidence is a very important characteristic to have because if one is confident in himself or herself, others can be confident in him or her as well and will not become frustrated with his or her low self-esteem. Her romantic life could have been so much more successful if she had simply believed in herself and had a positive self-image. She needed to see that men would have taken interest in her had she done these things, and she needed to understand that physical appearance is certainly not the only (or most important) thing that matters in a romantic relationship or in life in general.
