I believe that Ted's parenting improved tremendously over the course of time he spent with Billy. In the beginning of the movie Ted was very selfish, only focusing on his career and not realizing that he was ruining his marriage as well as his relationship with his son. When time came for Joanna to leave, reality hit Ted very quickly. It let him know that it was time for him to step up and be the parent Billy needed in his life. Throughout the movie, Ted's parenting skills enhanced and he grew an unconditional love for Billy, far more significant than he had before.
He realized that he had to live for him son and not just for himself. I think that it was in Joanna's best interest to leave and let Ted become the father he could be. As it is very common for children in their adolescent years to be closer to their mothers, this movie symbolizes the good in fathers as well. No one is perfect and it does take time to grow on someone, which is what happened with Billy and Ted. Yes, Ted was Billy's father in the beginning of the movie, but his role as a parent was defined as much more affectionate and loving for his son towards the end. Overall, I believe Ted did an excellent job of parenting Billy. Though he wasn't there for him like he should have been when he was a baby, the best time to grow a relationship with a child is during their childhood, as Ted did. The things and moments they remember are the most significant. His love for Billy is the love a father should have for his child.
