Joanna does not deserve to have custody of Billy. She walked out on her son and didn't even say goodbye. In court she discussed how she should have custody because she has motherly instincts and she would never leave again, but if she already left once how can she promise she won't leave again. She left the one thing you don't leave. If she didn't want to be with Ted anymore she could have just gotten a divorce and stayed in New York. She didn't have to go get help because that makes her even more unstable and won't be good for Billy's mental health. She hadn't been a mother for 18 months and doesn't know Billy's habits and how he lives now. She doesn't deserve custody of Billy because she left her family without notice and only wrote to her son explaining why she left.
