I think Ted did the best job he could for being a father, and he should have the custody of Billy. Before Joanna leave their house, he is selfish and don't listen to the people around him. And it caused Joanna to leave to find herself back in her life, now Ted is alone and has no clue about how to take care a child. For being a father, Ted started to learn how to take care a child, at first he is testy, and without patient. he was mad at Billy because he messed up his work, he cannot make a normal breakfast for Billy. but after all the struggles, he started to learn all the things that Joanna did for him before, he reads books for Billy, he cook breakfast with Billy ,started to love the people around him and be thankful. After the judgement, he lost. and he was going to appeal to a higher court, but when he heard it needs to take Billy and stand in the court, he decided not to appeal, because he understand this is not good for a 6 year old kid to stand in court and watch his parent fighting about him. and it means he love Billy very much. This is why I think he should have the custody of Billy.
